Websites have become something of a mandatory accessory to companies and individuals these days.
Everybody is going on about their new website, blog, photo gallery and
Twitter account - it never ends. And because of this, there are so many
different ways to approach getting a website, and so many systems you
can use to power your website.
CMS. E-commerce. HTML. PHP.
Database. MySQL. Joomla. These are just a few of the words that the
jargon-spewing web industry cram into our lives on a daily basis. It's
overwhelming, especially if you are just looking for a simple solution
so that you can be in with the crowd.
WordPress?
WordPress
is the name of a piece of software that is used as a content management
systen and popular blogging platform. In layman's - it is something
that exists on the Internet that allows you to easily add content to
your website - hence 'content management system'. There are plenty of
content management systems (CMS) around on the Internet, each with its
own pros and cons.
WordPress is simply the one I feel at home with
most, and the one I am most comfortable developing on. I also
personally think that it is the best solution for any website that
doesn't have specialised requirements. If you just want to have some
pages, pictures and downloads on your website, WordPress is definitely
for you.
I only have a small budget...
That's
fine! WordPress is an open-source solution, which means the software is
free to use. There are also so many free resources such as designs to
customise the way WordPress looked, which can be installed in a few
minutes.
Because of this, the amount of time spent developing can be
very small - and therefore costs can be kept very low.
What can you do for me?
At
heart I'm a developer. I sit at my desk typing bizarre languages into
bizarre programs to make things work the way you want them to. I'm not
much of a designer. That's not to say I can't design - I'm just not
very good at it. I do know people, though, so if you are looking for a
personal brand for your website as opposed to a downloaded (and
customised) freely-available template, that could be arranged.
Accessibility?
I
aim to comply to the latest web accessibility standards, and the website
I develop work on all popular web browsers at varying screen
resolutions based on today's standards. I don't need to overwhelm you
with technical explanations here - let's just say the end result works
for you, me, and everyone else.
What else?
Alongside
being able to develop a WordPress system that suits your needs, I can
provide you with domain names, website hosting, e-mail and technical
support. Even if you aren't looking for a WordPress solution, or you
already have one, I can provide these things. I want to sell my stuff!
WordPress
can be used as an e-commerce store. It's not the best piece of software
to use for a complex online shop, but if you only have a small amount
of things to sell, whether they are physical products or digital
downloads, WordPress can be extended to meet your requirements.
I don't want a website, I want a blog.
WordPress
doesn't have to be used as a fully-pledged content management system.
You might already have a website in place, and you might just want to
extend it by adding a blog in. That's also fine, and WordPress is
perfect for this type of solution.
I already have a website and/or design.
Brilliant!
As I mentioned before, I'm not a wonderful designer, and therefore if
you have a website that you like the look of, or you've got a good hand
in Photoshop but don't know how to code, I'm your guy. I am happy to
use an existing design as the basis for a WordPress installation.
PSD to WordPress...
"PSD
to WordPress" is becoming recognised as a term whereby you obtain a
design, provide it to a WordPress developer, and they can turn your
design into a fully-functional WordPress solution. This is something
that I am more than happy to do. If you know a designer, or want to
find your own designer rather than get a customised design through me,
I am happy to work from a PSD (Photoshop file).
What do I get?
If
you are starting from the beginning, and want a content management
system for your website, then from me you will get an installation of
WordPress.
This will allow you to add, edit and remove content on your
website - be that text, pictures, downloads, or anything else you need.
Additionally, you can choose to have a free design that is available on
the Internet (which can be customised), a premium design from a
professional website template resource, or a bespoke design made by a
freelance designer.
On top of that I am happy to go through setting up
website hosting and e-mail accounts, so that you won't have to look
elsewhere or do anything technical. You are also welcome to an ongoing
support contract. If, at any point, you would like to extend the
functionality of your WordPress Website, or perhaps change the look, I
can offer a range of services at a reasonable price.Call David (07538) 199694
